What People Mean by Black Mold
Black mold usually means Stachybotrys, a dark green to black mold that grows on drywall, wood and paper that stayed wet for a long time. Plenty of other molds look black too. You cannot tell which one you have by its color, and the CDC advises treating every mold growth the same way, by removing it and fixing the water problem.
Where We Find It in Las Vegas Homes
The valley is dry, so mold here almost always means a leak. We find it most in AC air handler closets where the condensate line backs up, inside sink cabinets after a slow drip, behind washers and refrigerators, around water heaters and in walls below an upstairs bathroom. Swamp coolers and attic AC drain lines add more.

Is black mold dangerous?
Any mold can cause allergy symptoms, coughing and asthma flare ups, especially for children, older adults and anyone with a weak immune system. The color does not tell you how risky it is. What matters is how much there is and fixing the leak.
Do I need a mold test first?
Not always. If you can see it and smell it, the plan is the same. Testing helps when you smell mold but cannot find it, or when you need a report for a landlord, a sale or an insurer. See our mold inspection page.
Does insurance cover black mold removal?
